Back • Senior Research Scientist

I am an entomologist specializing in the systematics, biogeography and ecology of island insects. I earned my PhD in Biosystematics from the University of Wales, College of Cardiff (UK) in 1995. Since 1996, I have been a faculty member at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Madeira, and I serve as curator of the University of Madeira Insect Collection (UMACI), overseeing specimen management, database curation, and facilitating research access. I am a founding member of APIS – Associação para Protecção de Invertebrados and a member of CIBIO-Inbio (Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, a laboratory associated with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT) since 2009.

My research focuses on Madeira’s entomofauna, emphasizing the systematics of Hemiptera (Auchenorrhyncha), reproductive ecology, host associations, and invertebrates inhabiting lava tube ecosystems. I lead field surveys, population monitoring, and data collection and critical baseline data to inform species assessments, biodiversity monitoring, Red List evaluations, and evidence-based conservation planning. I am particularly interested in endemic and threatened taxa, as well as the impacts of habitat change and invasive species on insular ecosystems.
