This species is endemic to Santa Maria island so has a small extent of occurrence (97km2), however it is abundant and faces no major threats, therefore it is considered as Least Concern (LC).
This species is only found on Santa Maria island, Azores.
Leptaxis sanctaemariae is common throughout Santa Maria island (Martins et al. 1991).
Leptaxis sanctaemariae is commonly found in forested areas, preferring clumps of undergrowing Hedychium gardneranum, but also frequently found under dead leaves and loose stones.
Due to the extent of its range and its abundance, no threats are foreseen.
No conservation measures are needed.
